Often referred to as the “James Hoffmann V60 Method,” popularized by the 2017 World Barista
Champion, James Hoffmann. I am confident And after much trial and variation, this is the best V60
Method. Period.
James Hoffmann V60 Method:
Ingredients:
- Freshly ground coffee beans (medium grind): 15-20 grams (adjust based on taste preferences)
- Water: 250-300 grams (plus additional for rinsing the filter)
- V60 dripper and filters
Instructions:
- Heat Equipment
Preheat your V60 dripper and coffee cup with hot water. This ensures a more stable temperature during brewing. - Rinse Filter
Place a V60 filter in the dripper and rinse it with hot water. This removes any papery taste and warms up the V60. - Add Coffee
Add the ground coffee to the rinsed filter, leveling the coffee bed. - Bloom
Start the timer and pour about 30-50 grams of hot water evenly over the coffee grounds, ensuring all grounds are saturated. Allow the coffee to bloom for 30-45 seconds. - First Pour:
Starting at around 45 seconds, slowly pour the remaining water in a circular motion, working from the center to the outer edge and back. Try to keep the water level consistent, avoiding pouring directly onto the filter. - Stir (Optional):
After the first pour, you can gently stir the coffee slurry with a bamboo paddle or spoon to ensure even extraction. - Continuous Pour:
Continue pouring water in a controlled manner until you reach the desired weight. Aim to finish pouring around 2:30-3:00 minutes. - Drawdown:
Allow the coffee to drain completely, usually finishing around 3:30-4:00 minutes. The total brew time can be adjusted based on taste preferences. - Serve and Enjoy:
Swirl the coffee in the cup, let it cool slightly, and enjoy the nuanced flavors of your V60-brewed coffee.
Remember that variables like coffee grind size, water temperature, and pouring technique can be
adjusted to suit your taste preferences. Hoffmann’s method provides a balanced approach, but feel
free to experiment and find what works best for you.
