French press coffee brewing journey!
Coffee-to-water ratio: 30 grams-to-500ml water
Grind size: medium
Technique 1: The Standard Method
Instructions:
Boil the water and let it cool slightly for about 1-2 minutes.
Add the coffee to the French press.
Pour the hot water over the coffee grounds.
Stir the coffee-water mixture with a wooden or plastic spoon.
Place the lid on the French press, with the plunger pulled all the way up.
Let the coffee steep for about 4 minutes.
Slowly press down the plunger, separating the grounds from the liquid.
Pour and enjoy.
Technique 2: The Blooming Method
Instructions:
Boil the water and let it cool slightly for about 1-2 minutes.
Add the coarsely ground coffee to the French press.
Pour a small amount of hot water over the coffee grounds, just enough to saturate them.
Allow the coffee to bloom for about 30 seconds to 1 minute, letting the grounds release
gases. After the blooming period, pour the remaining hot water over the coffee.
Technique 3: The James Hoffman Method
Instructions:
Boil the water and let it cool slightly for about 1-2 minutes.
Add the coarsely ground coffee to the French press.
Let the coffee steep for about 4 minutes – NO STIRRING
Gently stir the crust, wait 2-30 seconds for the coffee to fall
Scoop the remaining foam and course grinds off the top
KEY POINT – Wait for a further 5-8 minutes
KEY POINT – Slowly press down the plunger, just until it touches the surface of the coffee, no
further.
Pour and enjoy.
The point of difference with this method is the extra 5-8min brew time allows the grounds to
settle and by not pressing the plunger down all the way you avoid them being stirred up.
